vegetarian dog?
i recently got a puppy, shes 10 weeks old…..im a vegetarian and like want my dog to be to…. =/
wuld that be bad for her, like are there dog foods out there that hav no meat in them but still hav all da nutrients that dogs need?
or is this whole thing like plain tourture for her? xD i mean if shes never tried the stuff she cant miss it right?!
thanks for the advise everyone….i guess il just stick with the normal diet…i dont want to hurt her in any way….was just something i was wondering about is all…
Let me just correct several people – dogs are not obligate carnivores. Dogs, like people, are omnivores.
There is nothing in meat that neither dogs nor people HAVE to have to survive. Unlike cats, who NEED taurine or they will die. And taurine is found naturally and in high enough levels, only in meat.
Now, to your question. Yes, dogs can survive as vegetarians. But, there are some long term urinary tract problems that tend to surface in vegetarian dogs. Let me find the study –

While wolves are predators and eat a diet mostly of meat, but when meat is scarce, they eat vegetation. And wild dogs, are frankly, scavengers for the most part. They eat whatever they can get, which yes, is often left overs of meat.
I’m not saying that you should to one or the other. I just wanted you to have CORRECT information. I know I’ll get thumbs down for it, but sometimes people hate the truth.
The educated consensous is that yes, you absolutely can do it, under the vet’s care. You’ll have to do urine testing to ensure that the dog’s urine isn’t too alkaline and you’ll have to keep a watch on the dog to make sure all is well.
