Determine The Cause Of Your Dog’s Food Allergies
There are a number of ailments that animals can have that are the same or very similar to those ailments that occur in humans. Yes, it’s true, your dog can have allergies just like you. They can be caused by things such as allergens, food, or even pullutants. A trial period using an alternative dog food for dogs with allergies is an easy and safe process.
Pay close attention to the current health of your dog. Dog food allergy symptoms can be very similar to human allergy symptoms. Keep an eye on the skin in these areas: forelegs, feet, ears, nose and even the anal area. Are they scratching or rubbing those areas that may have red and irritated skin? How long have the symptoms been occurring and what have they had to eat within that same period of time?
Most of the time, curing the allergy is as simple as changing the food in their bowl. The trial period referred to in the first paragraph runs for about 10-14 days. This is sufficient time for the food your dog was eating to get out of the system, for the body to heal from the allergy symptoms and for the body to adjust to the newly introduced food.
The purpose of the trial period is to hopefully stop the allergies naturally but it can be a frusterating time for the dog and the owner. The only food that your dog should receive is the new food and of course water; this means no other foods or treats. Think of this trial period as a cleanse for your dog to see if the allergies were caused by the food. Many agree that this process to check and see if the old dog food was causing the allergies, is the simplest and most humane.
If the symptoms continue to linger then a trip to the veterinarian is your best bet. You don’t want prolonged allergies to limit your dog’s daily activities. A simple checkup can often determine what in fact the problem is. Remember to keep in mind that there isn’t a specific food to give your dog if they have allergies. As with humans, the suffer must remove themselves from the root cause or take medication.
If you have allergies, you are very aware how much of a nuisance they can be. Imagine how your dog must feel. In addition, can you imagine having watery eyes and a runny nose and not being able to dry them? A healthy dog is a happy dog. Since your pet can’t literally tell you how they are feeling, it’s up to you to keep them alive and well. If you are the kind of owner that only gives your dog one or two kinds of food, and your dog was allergic to one of them, imaging how unhappy your dog would be with only one kind of food!
More than likely, dog foods contain different ingredients and as an owner, it’s very important to follow the trial period to determine dog food allergies.
