Living things
This should go without saying ! However, there have been cases where people have tried to store live animals and plants. It’s simply illegal.
Perishable food and animal products
Anything that may attract insects or rats is prohibited. Canned food is fine, but perishable foodstuffs such as cereals aren’t.
Tyres and cars
The general requirement is for vehicles to be operational, insured and with up-to-date registration.The cost of disposing of tyres is considerable, so most facilities limit them to four per unit.
Medical equipment and supplies
Most medical supplies can be stored, and a number of pharmaceutical organisations use self-storage as cost-efficient way of warehousing.However, it is illegal to store radioactive equipment or anything that contains radioactive material.
Flammable, hazardous or poisonous materials
These are prohibited from being stored as they are considered to be ‘inherently dangerous’.Things like gasoline, gas, propane tanks, fertiliser, narcotics, chemicals and paint cleaners aren’t allowed.Explosives, fireworks, weapons, guns and ammunition as well as asbestos and products containing asbestos are not permitted in storage.
Appliances
While appliances can be stored in the units, the general rule is that can’t be operated inside the unit.
High value items
Jewellery, antiques etc that are of high value may be prohibited by some facilities.Investigate the insurance cover before committing anything to storage.
The restrictions are reasonable and have been effected to protect the safety of staff and contents of the units.
